teeth removed

sore tooth After a long time of suffering on and off, Ice finally persuaded me to go to a dentist last night. I went, and after some poking and prodding, they referred me to an oral surgeon for emergency surgery, which led to the removal of two teeth this morning. The teeth removed were my wisdom tooth and the one next to it - there was a major infection under them and they were both too far gone to save, so out they came. Hopefully this will mean an end to the dizzy lightheaded spells I've been getting for quite some time too - apparently the abscess-like infection would occasionally 'burst' and the result would be poisoning my blood which led to the dizzyness and nausea etc. Yummy huh?

IceQueen took the day off so she could be there for me, which was awesome - I certainly needed the moral support - dentists and needles freak me out. The last (and only) time I went to a dentist here I reacted to the epinephrine that they mixed with the lidocaine and I ended up unconscious and no dental work was done at all. The dentist today said that the epi and some other stuff also contains adrenalin which increases the heart rate, and that can cause some people to lose consciousness. This time they actually put me to sleep first rather than just give a local, which was much preferred in my opinion (heck, if they tried to just give me a local I'd probably go unconscious anyway, so..) . My mouth is still mostly numb at the moment and I have some painkillers for when the numbness wears off so hopefully it wont be a problem.

I have another tooth badly chipped - actually I chipped it years ago in NZ, had it capped, then broke off the capped part back in November 2002, which I think led to the unconscious drama mentioned above. That tooth can still be saved, so I have to go back to the normal dentist in a couple of weeks to have a root canal done along with a bunch of fillings over two separate appointments. I guess it's been pretty much 20 years since I went near a dentist (other than that one cap back in NZ years ago), so I should be thankful it's not worse than it is. As Ice keeps reminding me, once it's done it's done, and I'll feel a lot better for it. Thanks sweetness.

happy weasels Believe it or not, Ice and I hooked up 5 years ago today - it's gone so fast! We're still just as googly-eyed with each other today as we were back then, and I'm sure we always will be.

Ice had a class this morning at NYU, after which we planned to go out somewhere to celebrate, but in the end we spent the entire afternoon playing Risk (a board game in which Ice beat the crap out of me ..this time) and generally enjoying each other's company. Just as well really, because the wind kicked up and it turned bitterly cold out - right now it's 16°F (-9°C) out there, and the windchill brings that down to a nasty 0°F (-18°C) - not the best for frolicking around outdoors.

Rather than mess about in our tiny kitchen brewing up something relatively edible, we decided to try ordering delivery from a local restaurant we discovered just recently, and what a good move that was! A real dinner, complete with fresh bread rolls (still warm from the oven), soup, a main and salad, and even a desert. So much better than standard takeout crap like pizza or chinese, which we generally avoid anyway.

It's been a pleasant, relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable day together - we're happy as two weasels in a basket with a tasseled pillow, and that's pretty damn happy.

The weasel illustration comes from Lynne Chapman's 'An Alphabet of Nursery Rhymes'

winter finally makes an appearance

eat snow After an unusually mild winter so far, we are finally getting some snow. Previous winters have seen temperatures staying below freezing (32°F / 0°C) for a whole week at a time occasionally, however the last month or so has seen days with temperatures peaking near 60°F (15°C), and no snow at all. Until now.

The weather guys predicted a bit of a blizzard, and this time they got it right. It started with light snow at about 4pm yesterday - as predicted, then got heavier around 7pm - as predicted, and it's been snowing heavily all night - as predicted. Currently there's maybe 8 inches (20cm) of snow on the ground at a very conservative estimate, however the weather guys have been predicting around 15 inches (nearly 40cm) and up to 2 feet (60cm) of snow by the time it eases later this afternoon. From what I saw on the news a few minutes ago, Manhattan has already passed the 20 inch mark (50cm) so maybe we will hit the 2 feet mark. The temperature is expected to be hitting highs of 50°F (10°C) by Thurday. Go figure.

I wrote a whole bunch more here about IceQueen's birthday weekend and about the Muslim cartoon riots, but unfortunately I wiped the entire entry by mistake, and I'm not in the mood to rewrite it all again. For now I'll just say this: for a religion that preaches tolerance and peace, these extremists sure have a funny way of showing it.

sunset through the snow ..later in the evening..

Ok, well it snowed alright.. or should that be snew? or snood maybe?

By 4 o'clock in the afternoon, 26.9 inches (68.3cm) of fresh snow lay in Central Park, making it the worst blizzard to hit New York since records began in 1869. Who would have thunk? People were skiing down Broadway in Manhattan. Serious.

I looked out the window just on dusk and managed to quickly grab this picture (thanks to IceQueen's suggestion) of the sun setting through the snow. Quite amazing isn't it ..although it almost looks like something exploding. Hmm.

In the morning while it was still snowing heavily, the guy who lives in the house behind our building was out with his noisy snow-blower machine (petrol engine) attempting to clear a path around his house. What I can't figure out is why the hell he bothered when it was still a full-on snow storm out there? The work he labored at for several hours was covered in snow again within an hour of him 'finishing' the job. What was the point? It's like those people you see in Fall (Autumn) furiously raking up dead leaves when the wind's blowing 25mph - it's nothing but an exercise in futility, so why do they do it? Freaks.

happy birthday icequeen

birthday cake It's IceQueen's birthday today (yes, we're both aquarian, of course). It seems we have an active weekend lined up - Ice is at work today (they all went out to lunch to celebrate her birthday), then tonight, well, the plans keep changing as quickly as I suggest them, so we'll just see what happens. Saturday night we're going out with Ice's friend Margo and her boyfriend somewhere in Manhattan I think - not sure where but Ice knows - and then Sunday night we're out with Ice's parents, the Cat and the Lemur, probably to a nice restaurant on the boardwalk at Brighton Beach. Somewhere amongst that Ice has her final exam for a short class she had at NYU over the last week, but the exam is online and open-book, and she can do it any time between Friday and Sunday apparently, so I'm sure we'll squeeze that in somewhere - kind of important really.

Ok, it looks like we're now going to a restaurant in downtown Brooklyn tonight - providing there's no gunfights in the area before we get there. That wasn't a joke either. We're going earlier in the evening so it's still relatively safe at that time. Ok got a lot to do, so cya.

Happy Birthday Weasling! *kisses*
