On a similar vein to these previous entries, the latest effort from a couple of New York's Finest involved ticketing a woman for sitting on a park bench because she doesn't have children. Really.
According to the story run by ABC, the officers, obviously well-trained at sensing a dangerous situation when they encounter one, did the only thing sensible - while they were writing this dance instructor a summons, they called for back-up. Already guarded by two officers, one of whom had his hand on his gun, according to Catena, two more police officers soon arrived and stood nearby with their hands on their guns in case there was trouble. *rolls eyes* Well I'm so glad the world's park benches are safe from dance instructors. Now if they could just do something about rapists, muggers, murderers, thieves, gangs etc, things might be even better. Seriously, who reads those signs anyway? Generally speaking, if you've seen one, you've seen them all - normally containing the expected "no alcohol, dogs not on leashes, littering, skateboards, loud music etc etc", in fact, if I had read the sign pictured here, I would've thought that the rule prohibiting adults except in the company of children was a joke or a rather silly typo. Apparently not, according to ABC 7's report: The city parks department said the rule is designed to keep pedophiles out of city parks, but a parks spokesman told the Daily News that the department hoped police would use some common sense when enforcing the rule. The spokesman told the paper that ticketing a woman in the park in the middle of the day is not the way you want to enforce the rule. I realize it's just asking for trouble putting a law on the books and expecting it will be enforced with common sense, but come on. Speaking of common sense, the best way to protect your child from becoming the target of a sick child molester is to keep an eye on them, particularly in public places, and not rely on criminals to obey some ridiculous sign. Seriously, do you think people would feel safe leaving their wallet on the ground in a park if there was a sign saying "no stealing"? I don't think so. Besides all this, if this is a public funded park, then people have a right to enjoy that park, whether they have children or not. Please, use your brains NYPD, your head isn't there just to keep your ears apart. Story sourced from ABC 7 News and Detroit Local 4 News. warped square

I've had lots of general bits of news to talk about recently but no time to do it unfortunately - one busy weasel here. I'm now doing two honors enrichment projects on top of the 17 credits, so that's keeping me occupied. One of the subjects is Federal Taxation - pretty intense stuff, and huge amounts to cover and learn ..and that's only scratching the surface really. Meanwhile Hurricane Rita has been stomping across the Gulf of Mexico with 175mph winds and a bad attitude. Pretty full-on. Hopefully it will weaken a bit more before landfall, but there's gonna be some big-ass storm surge regardless of weakening after the intensity it was hitting earlier - pressure was down to 897 for a while - that's one heavy weather system. one year smoke free

For those who saw a temporary entry last month (while I was beta testing MT3.2) about possibly having skin cancer, I have good news. The Doc took the biopsies and the results came back that they aren't malignant, so that's all good. The stitches in one area apparently pulled apart so that one is still healing (it's been like four weeks now) but the other area has healed really well. No worries. four years

The moment itself is still shrouded in surrealism, at least for me. anniversary

I forgot I had put some wine in the freezer to chill, but fortunately I remembered in time enough that the bottles didn't explode. Whether the wine will still be palatable after it defrosts is another matter entirely. Additional congrats to Ice - she is getting her very own intern to bush disaster

Classic. hurricane katrina

I can understand those looting for supplies like food and water and necessary clothing to survive, but there are many who have been looting jewelery and electronic shops and the like, their only motivator being their own selfish greed and opportunism at the expense of others. These people don't deserve any mercy whatsoever. Personally I think the authorities should declare martial law and shoot anyone found looting goods, at least goods that are not required for survival. What a knife in the back for all the citizens of New Orleans who not only have suffered from this natural disaster, but now have to be kicked while they're down by fellow citizens who do not deserve to be a part of their or any other society.
What also pissed me off is this report from WorldNet Daily News: Mike Franklin stood on the trolley tracks and watched the daylight crimes go down. "To be honest with you, people who are oppressed all their lives, man, it's an opportunity to get back at society," he told AP. You arrogant fuck. What a cop-out - damn that just makes me sick. Hey Mike, if I loot the rotting corpse of your mother, you'll have to forgive me, because it's your fault that I'm doing it. Prick. And then ya wonder why suddenly people are less quick to send aid. pfft. Yet another day where I see more examples of the devolution of human society, and realize that the human race is little more than a parasite, most likely destined to be the cause of its own demise through greed and aggression. To the true victims of Hurricane Katrina, I offer my condolences and wish you a rapid recovery. To the scumbags looting New Orleans - one word: karma. Donations may be made via the red cross, although there are no doubt other agencies you can donate through as well - just be wary that it's not some new previously unknown charity run by low-life scum planning to make a profit out of others misfortune. It wouldn't be the first time. insults
