honors awards

      Tuesday 17 May, 2005 at 8:45PM (Nereus)  ::  permalink  ::  comments (5)

There was an honors ceremony this afternoon at college (or honours for the NZers) and I received two, which was kinda groovy. One was a honors option program 'certificate of achievement' which is basically a merit award for actually making it into the honors program as well as doing two or more honors courses among your regular courses within one semester (I'm doing three). The second award was the President's Diligence Award for those within the honors program that have also achieved a particularly high GPA, and this award included a US$100 cheque, which was certainly welcome. There was a total of about 40 recipients for these two awards combined, and then perhaps another 40 who received an award for successfully completing one (or more) honors subjects the previous semester. For a relativity check, the total student population there is around 16,000 students apparently, which surprised the hell out of me (I thought it was a lot smaller than that) ..presumably that includes part time and evening students as well. Yay me or whatever.

phi theta kappa

Phi Theta Kappa stole and double honor cord I was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa international honors society earlier this evening - it's some sort of society for honors students with high overall grades. I'm still kind of mystified as to what it really means (implications, connotations, stigma if any etc), but I'm told it looks very good on a resumé, and what's more is that it has some scholarships available to the top members, which certainly could come in handy in future if I qualify. Apparently we also get to wear a gold stole (scarf thing) and tassles (oooh! tassles! weeee!) and lead the 'procession' when we graduate. Hmm.

The induction ceremony was in an auditorium full of students and their families and involved some pledge and then coming on stage, doing the handshake thing, signing a register, and that was pretty much it. I was a little late arriving, so I missed most of the speech at the start. We weren't given the certificates or stole and tassel or anything so I don't know when that is supposed to happen... perhaps they send it to us later?

I've been pretty busy with study (hence the lack of any updates recently) and have yet another exam next week, along with a heap of major projects falling due over the next couple of weeks, then final exams in early June. The exams I had recently all went well btw - straight A's in everything.
