This picture was recently posted on the NZ surf forums that I frequent. As yet I am unsure who this is or where it was taken, but this is one insanely massive wave.

so how would this guy deal with such a wave? would he be able to get out, escape? this wave seems like a killer.

Photoshop? Or is it real Nereus? If real, insanity doesn't begin to describe what must be going through his mind... except maybe a short prayer. :)

Yup, it's real. There's a pic on my site here of a big wave in NZ that I know is for real.

Yeah he'd get out ok, I doubt he'd take off on it if he wasn't pretty sure he was able to get out. Waves this big travel so fast that they have to get towed onto it by jetskis as they wouldn't be able to paddle fast enough to catch it otherwise.

Usually it's just a massive peak like an A-frame so you just take the drop and bottom turn (like this guy is now) and then get off over the 'shoulder' of the wave, rather than the wave being a big long wall that's going to shut down on you.

There's a place called Mavericks that breaks huge like this and guys surf it often now. They had a competition there a few years back and made a few movies about it too ('Men Who Ride Mountains' & also 'In Gods Hands').. one of the world's top rated big wave surfers was killed there when he got caught inside during a comp, and more than a few others have also drowned while surfing there.

Scary shit.
