giving up smoking

no smoking Giving up smoking is turning out to be pretty tough. I cut right back to one or two cigarettes a day maximum when I started getting bronchitis (I'm still not 100% well, although there is some improvement. I'll be going back to see the doctor tomorrow and take it from there), and two days ago (on Tuesday) was the last time I had a cigarette. A lot of the time it seems not as hard as I was led to believe, providing I keep myself occupied doing other things, but there are times when I really want a smoke. Probably the worst time is straight after dinner ..that and maybe the late afternoon 'take five and reflect on the day' smoke. There are no cigarettes in the apartment, so the temptation to light up is not present. I have yet to resort to wearing a NicoDerm patch although they're there if I really need to. I have a feeling the craving is going to get stronger before it lets up. This is actually a pretty major step as I've been smoking for many years up to about 15 ciggys a day ..then again, I used to go out and get hammered all the time too, yet the last time I got even slightly drunk was over two years ago (just before I left New Zealand). I'm evolving. Weee. Writing about it is actually making me want a smoke, so I'm going to sign off now.

Thanks to Janet for posting this link on Ice's comments. It's the results for the Weasel Awards from dilbert.com. Here's the highlights:

The second annual exuberantly non-scientific Weasel Poll results are in. 35,874 people voted. The winners are...

  • Weaseliest Organization : RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) ..those rat bastards
  • Weaseliest Country : France
  • Weaseliest Company : Microsoft
  • Weaseliest Profession : Politicians
  • Weaseliest Individual : George W. Bush
  • Weaseliest Behavior : Blaming fast food restaurants for making you fat

nice one.

Good luck in your goal to quit smoking, D. It's a lofty (and healthy) one. When a friend of mine tried to quit smoking, she would suck on jolly ranchers anytime she got a craving. I don't know if it'll help. *shrug* Anyway, hope you feel better soon, bronchitis is awful!

heh.. I didn't even know what jolly ranchers were until I asked the other weasel - I was thinking gay cowboys, which is a kinda extreme way to stop smoking don't ya think? I've been sucking on robitussin eucalyptus cough drops so the theory is the same. Cheers Himani :)

Thanks Jewdez, glad ya like it :)

I've actually just started thinking about redesign.. hmm.. but I like how the site looks now too..

hang in there, demon! You can DO IT!

I quit smoking on May 29. I understand the pain, rage, and frustration.

For the first week, my skin started recovering so I got acne, I felt nauseous most of the time, and every time I was walking down the street and I saw someone light up, I wanted to run up to them and rip the cigarette right out of their fingers so that I could have a puff.

But it's all mind over matter (mind over addiction?), and in the end, your quality of life will jump - I swear to you - by at least 60%. Going to the gym helps. If you become an annoying non-smoking convert, it raises the stakes of having a cigarette (by reducing your credibility), so that's recommended too. :) I hope that helps. good luck! you will prevail!

Hey Nereus,
You can do it!!! Don't give up. Or should I say, "Nip it in the butt!"
I know it is a bitch. The only thing that made it really hard on me to keep smoking was my running. Can't very well suck down like 10 cigs and then try to run 3 miles... no way in hell. So, screw it... if I can commit to screwing my body up maybe I can committ to actually doing something good for it? Dunno that was my logic.
