the end of the world as we know it

Greenland Meteor by Don Dixon The human race may have only 10 years 7 months and 17 days left. As reported on CNN, a giant asteroid is heading for Earth and could hit in 2014, U.S. astronomers have warned British space monitors. Asteroid '2003 QQ47' will be closely monitored over the next two months. Its potential strike date is March 21, 2014, but astronomers say that any risk of impact is likely to decrease as further data is gathered. On impact, it could have the effect of 20 million Hiroshima atomic bombs, a spokesman for the British government's Near Earth Object Information Center told BBC radio. Don't quit your jobs just yet though - the chances of a catastrophic collision are just one in 909,000 at present.

To be honest, those odds aren't all that scarey... still a big ball fo gas a rock coming even remotely near the planet is no laughing matter.

Can't they destroy it somehow?

Only in sci-fi movies.. if push comes to shove though, I presume a bunch of nukes launched into space would be the only chance. If it's moving as fast as the meteorites that bounce off our atmosphere (which is farking fast if you've seen 'shooting stars') then we are FUKT!

It would actually be moving MUCH faster than meteorites, since it has more mass and thus more inertia and momentum.

We could launch nukes at it, but the analogy used in Armageddon (ie. firecracker, open palm) is mostly applicable.

As a christian, I'm not worried a bit about this thing...and that's not just because I know where I'm going when I die. And a word of advice-beware anyone who tells you a time or date of the "end of the world" because not even the angels know that info. I'm not saying that there's no way the thing is going to hit. Because if it does there are going to be a lot of tragic deaths...I'm saying: Be ready either way!
