white christmas

      Thursday 26 December, 2002 at 1:09PM (Nereus)  ::  permalink  ::  comments (0)

NYC Christmas 2002 Wow. We certainly got a white Christmas with one of the biggest xmas day snowfalls on record for NYC. Parts of the city had over 6 inches of fresh snow, and the suburbs (or boroughs as they call them) up to 12 inches in some areas, although most areas like where I am got around 6 inches max. Today has turned out sunny although with strong winds, so most of that snow is melting or turning to ice pretty quickly. We did very little yesterday, just stayed in and watched the snow and generally weaseled around the apartment and played scrabble and stuff. I built a snow sculpture on the windowsill of our apartment with the snow that had accumulated there (they are deep windowsills, maybe 4 or 5 inches deep). I built a ..umm.. snow ..umm ..phallic kind of thing. Ok, ok, yes, I made an 8 inch high snow penis on our windowsill, complete with grossly oversized nuts. Hey, it was funny at the time.

I got hold of both my sister and my mum on the phone later on Christmas Day (NZ time) and had a good long call with each of them. I guess days like this make me a little homesick, especially for Amber. For years, Christmas morning meant getting up at 6am and throwing my surfboards in the car and heading to Raglan for an early morning surf, kinda like my present to myself. Strangely enough, every single Xmas morning except for the last one turned out with some of the best waves of the year and only a couple of guys out surfing. I'm glad I'm here with IceQueen though.

Talked for quite a while to my Dad over in Los Angeles, which was great - we haven't really had much if any contact at all for many years until just recently, so that was all groovy. Not much else to tell. IceQueen has to work tday - we slept in so she didn't actually get to work until after midday, but hey, fuck 'em - it's Christmas.

christmas eve

Hey it's Christmas Eve! Been attempting to phone New Zealand all afternoon but the lines have been overloaded *stare*. I managed to get through to my Mum for a few minutes early on, and later I eventually got through to Amber in Whangamata and talked for about half an hour which was kewl - well timed too as they were soon leaving the house and heading to Mahia for a week! Amber has started surfing too!!! Sweeeet! Unfortunately the only time I got through to my sister was just to her answer-phone, so I wished her answer-phone a Merry Christmas. I've been trying for ages since, but I cant get through to any NZ numbers at all now.

Ok that's it for now. Merry Christmas to all and if you don't return sooner, I hope your new year brings fame, fortune, adventure, and really wild things. Cheers!

merry nuclear christmas

Something I read the other day here that made me a little jumpy - President Bush said that if anyone uses biological or chemical weapons against USA (presumably on US soil) that the US will reply with nuclear force. In fact the headline was something like, "You gas us, and we'll nuke you!" ..I don't think NYC is going to be the safest place to be if nukes start getting lobbed around. Did I blog about this already? Nah.. think it was an email I sent to someone ..whatever, it's a pretty scary thought.

So it's getting dangerously close to Christmas and I don't know what the plans are for us, although I think it'll probably be something like this:

  • wake up
  • open eyes
  • nudge the other Weasel
  • me: "hey it's Christmas"
  • other weasel: "mm"
  • me: "kewl"
  • go back to sleep
  • other weasel: *giggle*

One good thing about living in the past relative to NZ (..I'm talking time zones here for the slow ones reading this) is that I can call NZ on Christmas Day when it's only Christmas Eve here, so I shouldn't have to worry so much about all the phone lines being overloaded - I mean, how many NZ'ers have I met here over the last year? NONE.

happy birthday amber

Happy birthday to Amber today!! *hugs*. I will again try to call and see if I get something other than the stoopid answer-phone this time.

Well it's definitely snowing outside, in fact it's been snowing for the last hour or so and it's accumulating rather than melting straight away. It's supposed to snow for the next few hours at least, so we'll see what eventuates. Groovy.

..update around 9pm..

snow-covered central park, new york

Hey. It's been snowing all day and there's plenty of it. Fun! I went for a walk to the shops about ten minutes ago just for an excuse to have a romp in the snow - I had this big silly grin on my face the whole time, and was finding a bit hard not to just burst out laughing. I'll be going out again shortly to meet the Weasling at the train and walk home with her. Weee. I likes snow.

The picture here is of Central Park a little earlier this afternoon - gives you a good idea of just how much snow there's been today, and it's still coming down, although tapering off compared to earlier. Looks kewl huh? I think so.
